I know I've been missing from all things online lately and I just wanted to give y'all a quick update on some recent happenings around here. Our little kitten, Tater, that we adopted back in October has been very sick. After many, many trips to the vet and countless exams, tests, xrays, and an ultrasound, she has been diagonsed with a rare but deadly virus, FIP. There is no cure for FIP and most cats diagnosed will only live a matter of weeks.
Needless to say, we are all pretty devastated.
We have had her home since Monday and are giving her supportive care right now in the form of fluids, antibotics and steroids. She a tough little bugger and is fighting this pretty well right now, but sometimes the continual fever gets her down. She's been napping on warm blankets in the dryer and enjoying some sun from her window perch, and she's still eating like a little horse. We're not sure how long she'll continue to be stable. We're just praying for a few more precious days (or maybe weeks?) to continue to love her to pieces.
I've spent way too much time in the wee hours of the morning (heartache breeds insomnia) reading about veterinary research on this horrible disease. There are currently some drugs available that might possibly prolong her life, but the availability and cost are uncertain. And there's the continual question of quality of life...and that all-too-real probability that will likely have to let her go before we are ready. (Are we ever ready??)
Right now, we're just taking it day by day. Focusing on the happy memories this cuddly creature has brought us in her short six months. Realizing the fragility of life and just how precious it is. Trying to understand just how unfair life can be sometimes.
So I might not be around too much, here or other places I am usually online. My family and this kitten need me. Thanks for understanding.
