While I like to think of my scrapbook designs as being simple, I always try to add a few extra details to keep them from being too simple. Stitching, layered papers or die cuts, fabric and ephemera are just a few of the products I've used to spice up a design. A little added texture or handmade touch can make a uncomplicated design seem much more complex than it really is.
On the page I'm featuring today, I incorporated texture to enhance a relatively plain design - a wide center band with photos and accents layered over it.
S U P P L I E S:
I could have easily used a large piece of patterned paper to span the width of the page. But to kick it up a notch, I cut several of the BasicGrey Barista papers into 1/2" strips and wove them together. Instead of a traditional over/under on each row, I wove strips three at a time, which creates the herringbone pattern.
Above and below my photos I clustered die cuts, stickers and buttons, popping them all off the background with foam adhesive. I also tucked in my title under the photos using square chipboard letters.
Not only does the woven background add texture to the design, it creates a pattern that helps lead the eye across the page to the focal point. And it's much more interesting than just a plain piece of patterned paper. So the next time you think a layout might be missing something, try a little texture! The tactile interest it adds to a page can make all the difference.
