Wardrobe Wednesday | A Little Bit Rock & Roll

 

 

Every now and then, a girl's gotta throw on her skull tee, hop in the car, cruise around with the windows down blasting some Led Zepplin, and do something totally crazy. Like consume TWO venti triple lattes from Starbucks in one day. I'm living on the edge, y'all.

I picked up this tee about a week ago at Ross (though you can find similar ones at Express and Tilly's) thinking it would be a cool piece to pop under a conservative blazer or pair with a straight-laced pencil skirt and cardigan. But I couldn't wait for fall temps and grabbed it to top my red skinny capris for the here and now.

I actually originally had on my neon yellow pumps, (I told you I was doing something crazy!) but the ensemble was feeling just a little too 80s gone wild. So I swapped them out for my beige espadrilles.

And as long as we're being honest...when I referenced listening to Led Zepplin earlier? I might have meant to say 'N Sync. I'm totally gonna blame JT and the VMAs for blowing my coolness cover. You can dress a girl up, but you can't squelch her affinity for cheesy pop ballads.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Shorts Round-Up

Back in May when the weather started heating up and it was time to pull out the boxes of shorts and tank tops, I realized I was gonna have to say goodbye to my colored jeans for a few months. And that made me sad and a bit pouty. See, when colored denim made a comeback, I might have gone a bit overboard and bought two (or twelve) pairs of jeans in the bright, vibrant hues. And I really, really wanted some shorts to replace those jeans during the heat of summer. But I knew if I wanted to keep the peace with the husband, I couldn't go crazy buying every happy color I saw. So I picked out three pairs to add to my rotation:

I realize this post might have been more timely at the beginning of summer, but the bonus of posting it now is that you can probably grab these shorts on sale (in preparation for next summer!) And all that money you save? Well, you just better be spending it on wine.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Popcorn, Anyone?

It definitely feels like summer is slipping away. The cool mornings and the rainy afternoons are making me think that my shorts and tank tops will soon be pushed to the back of the closet to make room for the jeans, boots and sweaters of fall. But in the meantime, I'm grabbing my favorite cropped jeans and a lightweight scarf to enjoy the lingering days of the summer season!

The fact that summer is almost over is also reiterated by the fact that both my kiddos go back to school at the end of this week. It's making us all a bit melancholy to say goodbye to the season. So yesterday I decided we needed a little comedic relief in the form of Despicable Me 2. Because there's nothing like minions covering 98 Degrees and Village People to help you shake those end-of-summer blues.

All of which has nothing to do with this week's Wardrobe Wednesday outfit. Except for the fact that this is what I wore to the movie. And if you happen to be sitting in a movie on a summer afternoon and need to wipe your greasy, popcorn-covered fingers on something, I'd highly recommend wearing a scarf.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Girly Girl

In my life, there aren't many summer events that require dressy attire. That doesn't mean I don't secretly wish for more reasons to get all gussied up in girly-girl style. (And sometimes not-so-secretly. See last Wednesday's post on what I consider perfectly acceptable attire for camping.) But when a slightly fancier event does pop up into the schedule, like a play or a concert...maybe an afternoon wedding or baby shower...you can bet I'll take full advantage!

I nabbed this a-line skirt in a spring sale at Anthropologie, knowing it would be a great partner with my favorite white button-down shirt. Ok, I have way more than one white shirt - they are the most prolific item in my closet - but due to my propensity for spilling things like sauces and oh yes, red wine on myself, they don't usually have a long life, so I tend to stock up.

Ever since Sharon Stone wore the white Gap shirt to the 1998 Oscars, I've loved the combo of tailored shirt + feminine skirt.  The white oxford was a perfect backdrop for some colorful accessories, so I added my blue sandals, a chunky beaded necklace and a yellow clutch.

I do have plans for other pairings with this whimsical skirt: topped with a tee and jean jacket...or a cardigan twin set and kitten heels...or maybe a cable knit sweater with tights and boots when falls rolls in. There's nothing like a flirty skirt to make you feel like a girl. Well, at least until you trip over the threshold and spill your wine all over it.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Summer Uniform

Most of the warm-weather months you can find me in my go-to summer outfit: jean shorts and a comfy cotton tee. It's a combo that's easy and practical (two words that can't always be applied to my wardrobe pieces - 4" heels anyone?!? ) but I always try to put my own twist on this standard summer uniform.

I layered my embellished tee with a simple gauze + lace vest that's lightweight and dresses the whole outfit up without being too stuffy. And if you wanted to wear this outfit, oh i dunno, maybe camping? The vest could totally double as mosquito netting. At least that's what I'm telling Mike.

And - hello!  I'm pretty sure some of those bracelet beads could be used as fish lures.

I'm giggling at my own ridiculousness.

Yes, so perhaps my camping fashion recommendations still need some field testing. But for putzing around civilization in the summer? This is one of my favorite looks. What's yours??
