Wardrobe Wednesday | Changing Colors

This is the time of year in Colorado when the aspen leaves begin changing, putting on a spectacular colorshow of vibrant reds, oranges and yellows. Just take a drive up any mountain road and you're sure to encounter lots of city folk hoping to capture the scene on film (and usually blocking the road in the process.)

Since such instances make me prone to road rage, and often cause pumpkin spice latte spillage and flinging of expletives, I've opted to skip this rite of fall.  Rather, I've chosen to pay homeage to autumn like any responsible adult woman should: with a new pair of shoes.

I stumbled upon these lovely leopard booties on the clearance aisle at Nordstrom Rack. They were missing their laces, presumably why they were marked down to an insanely low price. But I happen to be married to a fellow shoeaholic who keeps a stock of funky colored laces on hand (these are an awesome set if you want to spice up your guy's shoes) so I knew I could replace them easily. The red pair is a bold contrast, but I kinda love it.

Also changing colors for the season? My hair, which I've attempted to transition out of the summer blonde phase and into the ombre autumn phase. It's the first time I've paid to have my roots intentionally not match my ends. Then again, it does coordinate quite nicely with my new booties. Translation: expect to see a lot of these shoes in the next few months.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Feminine Fatigues

I love my army green pants almost as much as I love my favorite pair of jeans - they're soft, comfortable, and go with just about anything I feel like throwing on. Like a rhinestone necklace and pink pumps. Word.

 

Maybe it's because they're closely related to camo, or maybe it's the word "army" in their title, but whenever I wear these pants, I feel the need to offset them with definitively girly accessories. Because, you know....if I didn't add the bright heels and sparkly necklace, there's a chance I might be mistaken for a man. That, and the fact that I haven't shaved my legs for two weeks. (It's been raining for DAYS, people!)

And despite my lack of decorum by publicly admitting I have hairy legs, I did show some retraint by not donning my tiara with this outfit. Because, you know, THAT would've been ridiculous.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Pencil Skirt, 3 Ways

One might assume that a work-from-home mom doesn't really need a professional wardrobe. And one would be mostly right. Except for those days when all your yoga pants are dirty and starting a load of laundry is about as appealing as poking a dull pencil in your eye. Then it's nice to have a cute floral pencil skirt to style up. Nothing too fancy or corporate, mind you. Just a few casual alternatives to yoga pants and pencils jutting from your eyesockets. Here's three ways I love to wear this closet staple:

Wardrobe Wednesday | Breaking the Rules

I know the age-old fashion adage says you aren't supposed to wear white after Labor Day, but my desire to hold onto summer just a bit a longer (and the fact that it's been over 95˚ for five days straight) are forcing me to be rebellious and break that antiquated rule.

I topped them with a favorite layered silk blouse that I picked up last year at Hot Mama (which I avoided for the longest time, thinking it was a maternity store - but no! It's a fabulous little boutique experience that's become one of my favorites.) This shirt is a great transitional piece that's light enough for warm weather but also works well under a blazer or cardi for fall. I tried to keep it on the summery side by adding the bold coral necklace and two-tone ballet flats.

So that's me, defiantly breaking old-school fashion commandments. Of course, some rules are not meant to be broken. Like avoiding chartruese green taffeta on prom night. That one should definitely be kept firmly in place.
