Mad for Plaid.

I'm a big proponent of clothing pieces that do double duty. And if they happen to be plaid and serve two wardrobe functions? Well all the better. I bought this casual plaid dress as a cover-up for our spring break trip to Mexico. I knew it would be perfect for throwing over a bikini after a day in the sand and sun. The fabric is almost like linen - lightweight and breezy, though it kept its shape in the heat and humidity of the Riviera Maya. (Which is more than I can say for my hair. Holy hot mess!)

So while this dress was a perfect swimsuit cover-up for vacation, I've also been grabbing it lately a go-to summer outfit even when there's no pool in sight. I usually add a belt for a bit for shape and some comfy sandals and without much thought at all, an outfit comes together. Now if I could just find a way to make cleaning the house take this little effort.

White Hot.

All of you southern readers get ready to roll your eyes: it is HOT here in Colorado. We don't get too many days over 100˚ but when we do, I try to implement the standard remedies of wearing light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of fluids, and whining incessantly until it cools off.

The scorching temps this past week mean my white shorts have been getting plenty of use. Normally, I'd pair them with my beloved denim shirt, but it's too stinkin' hot for denim, so I opted for this ultra lightweight button up instead. Because nothing says cool like fruit-motif shirts, right?!

The white-on-white look isn't one I typically sport due to my propensity for attracting spills, but I figured that since I'm going virtually make-up free (it just melts off in this weather!) and only drinking white wine, the chances of staining the outfit were relatively low. So paired with some silver accents, this is my best attempt at beating the heat. That, and continually lowering the thermostat until our house resembles the climate of Siberia in January.

Green Thumb.

About this time every July, my enthusiasm for all the potted flowers and plants I so eagerly cultivated back in May starts to wane. Which means I forget to water them. And soon, they are dried up and dead and the patio resembles more of a plant graveyard than a festive site for barbeques and happy hours. 

Luckily I have these floral jeans to brighten up the place. They tend to flourish better than anything I've tried to grow, and bonus -  they don't require regular watering. They are also obnoxiously colorful enough to distract from the fact that I am, in fact, standing on a patio of dead plants due to my lack of attention span. Because if your pants don't divert attention away from your shortcomings, well, you need to get some new pants.

Sail Away.

The upcoming holiday weekend has definitely got me on a red, white and blue kick. And while I do admit to having an abundance of stars and stripes in my closet for just such an occasion, this year I opted for stripes and sailboats. Because nothing says I Love America like sailboats, right?! Paired with my very favorite striped tee, I'm ready for USA's birthday bash. But to keep the whole Americana theme in check, I added a gold & pink belt, simple leopard sandals and a vintage beaded clutch.

The skirt was a recent score from my new favorite shopping site - Instagram! I'm following several stylish girls who thrift some great items and post them for sale. It makes shopping (almost) too easy. As if there could be such a thing.
